6 Speargun Safety Tips

Although a speargun can be used for fun and sport, you must remember that it can also be a dangerous weapon that can cause injury to the handler and to those around them if it is not used properly. This is why it is so important to take note of the 5 safety tips I would like to share with you today.

Firstly you should always remember to only load your speargun when you are underwater. If you do so before you dive you could accidentally trigger the gun and shoot yourself or someone else accidentally.

Before you leave home, or at the very least before you get into the water check the gun over. You may have done so after your last dive, but damage can occur in transit or storage so make this part of your routine. If you do see any signs of damage that cannot be repaired on the spot with parts you or a teammate have on you, then it is better to come back another day to dive than to risk your safety.
Before you load your gun, ensure that you have the safety on. No matter what others say you should not make any modifications to the safety that is there for the protection of you and other divers.
Before you fire you should be sure of how far you want the spear to travel. The reason for this is that you can then be clear about anything that is in the path of your fire line and can move appropriately if necessary so as to avoid injury to others who are diving at the same time as you.

Be aware that your gun has recoil and hold it accordingly. Make sure you are familiar with the recoil and take someone who is experienced if you are not as being unaware or careless could mean you come out of the water with broken teeth, bones or even damage to the oxygen mask you are wearing. This of course is something you will want to avoid at all costs, especially if diving deeply.

Make sure you have the proper knowledge as to how to take care of your speargun.  When you come out of the water you will probably just want to get home after a long day, however you should ensure you rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry it in a place that is not in the suns light as this could cause unnecessary damage. When you remove the rubbers from the shaft it is advisable to store them in a fridge so that they are kept in the best condition possible.

Sound like something you want to get into? Remember to check out this post if you want to learn more?
